How to Practice Self-Care

Self-Care is a buzz word. But it’s so much more meaningful than your skincare routine or a massage. I look at Self-Care as a spiritual practice. As an opportunity to deeply care for myself. I meditate (almost) every morning. It’s an intentional part of my routine. It’s not always easy, but the practice of meditation is the practice of gentleness towards yourself. It helps you examine, learn, and understand yourself from a place of love and non-judgement.

Today, my morning meditation was on Worry. And worry… well that’s my middle name. Growing up, I learned that worry was a way to show love. I’m sure you can find worry lodged in my DNA. And within the experience of life, worry became my trauma response. I think, for some reason, I hold on to worry. Like worrying will keep me safe. Protect me. But it won’t. In fact, worrying just makes me feel bad. And it keeps my body in a state of stress - continuously feeding the worry loop. The shift from worry is intentional work. But it’s work that I want to do. I want to release the need to worry - the feelings it traps me in. I want to trust in myself and in something bigger than myself.

So today I will notice. Notice when I worry and how it makes me feel. Today I will offer gentleness to my worry, because I know why it’s there and I know the little girl in me that’s holding onto it. I know she has been hurt and scared, but I also know that she is safe. That she is deeply loved. That she does not need to worry. So today, I do the work, the spiritual practice, of self-care.

Today I invite you to practice self-care. I invite you to notice, with gentleness. I invite you to listen to your body, say no when you need to, and care for yourself above all else. If you need help with your self-care practice, help is here.
